THE READING ROOM

A history reference is not a whole tradition

A focused educational note on reading a reference, a drawing or a professional-learning context.

A starling pencil drawing in a sketchbook beside hands, a pencil, a feather and a bird reference book
ILLUSTRATIVE ART OR INDUSTRY PHOTOGRAPHY / NOT HISTORICAL OR PRACTICAL EVIDENCE

Identify the creator, institution or practitioner behind a tattoo-history reference. A documented object, a personal account and a broad survey offer different kinds of evidence.

Keep the place, date and attribution attached. Avoid claiming to represent an entire community through one image or presenting an unattributed interpretation as established historical fact.

QUESTIONS FOR A CLOSER READING

  1. Who produced the source?
  2. Which context does it describe?
  3. What perspective is missing?

Keep a usable source trail

Record the original creator or organisation, title, relevant date and source context. Separate what the material states from your interpretation. A short excerpt or photograph should not replace the complete responsible reference.

Write down the unresolved point

A useful next step is a precise question for another source or discussion. Practical methods, suitability and professional progression require the responsible qualified provider. A reading note does not issue a qualification, prescribe an invasive task or authorise practice.
